Cyberbullying

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology, such as a computer or cell phone, to hurt someone else on purpose. Bullies can appear to have more power than the people they hurt. They may be the same age as you, younger, older or more popular or they may know something private or embarrassing about their victim.

Here are some ways that other kids might cyberbully others:

Sending hateful or threatening emails,
instant messages or text messages

Sending or posting private or embarrassing photos online

Developing a website that rates
someone’s appearance or popularity

Creating a hateful blog about someone

Creating fake MySpace or Facebook accounts that ridicule someone

Threatening someone if they don’t expose themselves on a webcam

Stealing someone’s password then impersonating them online

Spreading lies, rumours or secrets online

Making false complaints to a website administrator,
cell phone provider or Internet service provider
about someone else’s online behaviour
