Frequently asked questions about calling

You can always call for more information about our service. Here are some comments and questions we hear a lot:

“I’m too scared to call.”

It’s normal to feel nervous about calling. Remember that our service is for you, and we’re here to help you whenever you’re ready to talk.

“I’m embarrassed about my question.”

If you’re feeling shy about talking about your problem, try writing it down first. Take a few deep breaths. The counsellor you speak to will understand if you’re nervous. Take your time. You can always call us back when you’re ready. Or, you can ask a few questions about our service first. For example, you could ask the counsellor to explain how our service is anonymous and confidential.

“What if I’m crying?”

That’s okay. Our counsellors are experienced and will be able to talk you through it.

“Are you guys going to think I’m a bad person?”

Not at all. We’re here to help you, not judge you.

“My problem’s not that huge. Should I just keep it to myself?”

There is no problem too big or too small for us. The call is about you, so if it’s important to you, then it’s important to us. Remember, we want to help you.

“Can I ask to speak to a male or female counsellor?”

You can ask to speak to a male or female counsellor, but we can’t always accommodate this kind of request. It all depends on who is available at the time of your call.

"Can I call KHP if I live outside of Canada?"

While we’d love to help everyone, our 1-800 number will only work within Canada.

"If I call, will the number show up on my phone bill?"

It depends. If you call from a cell phone, the number may show up on your bill. Even though we’re committed to providing confidential service, we can’t control the way service providers bill their customers. Keep in mind that our number will not show up on your bill if you call us using a land line. You could also consider using a pay phone if you're worried about this.

"Does it cost me minutes to call from my cell phone?"

Your call may use up minutes, but it depends on your service provider.

"Am I too old to call?"

Our service is for young people ages 5-20 years old. That applies to our phone service as well as Live Chat and the Ask Us Online forums. That doesn’t mean we’ll hang up on you if you’re 21 or older, but we’ll probably refer you to another service. Try not to take it personally—we just need to keep our lines open for the young people who fall within our service range.

"What information do you keep when I call your service and how do you use this info?"
