Sexual abuse is a hard road. You have probably felt a lot of different emotions since your abuse, like fear, anger, and confusion. Maybe you’ve reached out for help and were disappointed by the person you told. Maybe you’ve kept it to yourself all of this time. Sexual abuse is something that never should have happened to you.
Breaking the silence
You might not have told anyone about your abuse because you thought that time would make it go away. But the nightmares, guilt, anger and sadness have clung to you. You need to get help if your abuse is haunting you
Reaching out
Talking to a friend is a good start. Eventually, you also have to tell an adult you trust. That might be a parent, teacher, coach, principal or guidance counsellor. Telling one person might not change your situation right away. You might have to tell someone else. But don’t give up. You might decide to work with a counsellor who can help you sort through your feelings. Remember that we are always here for you at Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or online.
If you are not ready to talk to someone face-to-face, think about writing a letter.
Getting through each day
You might feel like you will never be free from the abuse, but you will. Healing takes time. Take it day by day.

What are you feeling today? How do you want to feel tomorrow? Did something good happen to you today? Do you have something to look forward to?

Be sure that you walk in a safe area, during the day. Go with a friend if possible. Take deep breaths.

What do your feelings look like?

Having fun with your friends will remind you how much they care about you.

You might start to see a counsellor who can help you work through your feelings. You can also have a confidential conversation with a counsellor at Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868.
