New words are always popping up online. But what do they mean? Here’s a shortlist:

Blog - An online journal with photos and videos.

Malware - Any kind of harmful software, including computer viruses and worms.

Chat Room - A website for live chatting between users.

Spam - Junk mail that is sent to a large number of people indiscriminately.

Hacking - Using a computer to steal private information.

Virus - Harmful computer programs that damage computers. Viruses can be sent to users through email.

Cookie - An invisible file that is placed on a user’s hard drive when some websites are visited. Cookies allow website administrators to see how many times a user visits the same site.

Worm - A computer program that damages several computers on the same network. Unlike a virus it does not need to attach itself to an exsisting program.

ISP - A short-form for Internet Service Provider, which is a company that provides users access to the Internet.

Cyberbullying involves using any kind of technology to hurt or intimidate another person, their reputation, or their relationships. Here are some examples:
- Sending cruel or threatening emails, texts, or instant messages
- Posting private or embarrassing photos of someone without permission
- Creating a website to make fun of someone
- Blogging mean things about people behind their back
- Making up fake accounts on social networking sites (like MySpace or Facebook) to ridicule someone
- Getting other people’s passwords to hack into their email and send fake messages to others
Flaming is online gaming harassment. A player might intimidate other players by mocking, name-calling, or being overly aggressive in games.
Identity theft is when someone uses your identity in order to steal your money, hack into your email, or pretend to be you on a website.
Sexual predators are people who try to get you to trust them and then betray that trust. They might talk to you for a few days or weeks before asking you to meet them somewhere by yourself, or trying to get you to take off your clothes in front of a webcam.
